I guess it wasn't a fair question - most of us like different "types" of books.   This is a "people's choice award" type thing - not classics.
what would be my choices for American classics? - off the top of my head:

John Barleycorn - by Jack London
Tortilla Flat - by John Steinbeck
Slaughterhouse Five - by Kurt Vonnegut
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest - by Ken Kesey

As for "gripping" - more popular reads:

Taipan by James Clavell - Story of the founding of Honk Kong - pirates!  swashbuckling!
The Deceiver by Frederick Forsyth  - awesome spy shit!

non-fiction
Castaway by Lucy Irvine  - a couple intentionally maroon themselves on an island - and they hate each other.
Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas - Hunter Thompson.

Sci-Fi
The Forever War,  by Joe Haldeman - some Viet Nam veterans pick a time war with some aliens - and it does not go well for either side.
The Futureological Congress - When wars get fought with LSD bombs, things can get rather strange.

@Alexis - I haven't read "Red Tent" but I like historical fiction.

Came to post because I just heard on KPBS that tonight at 8PM they will have a show called, "The Great American Read" - I wasn't paying much attention - sounds like it started from some huge book club on Facebook - looked up the link and found this description but I think I will just tune in on the radio:

I'm not really proposing anything but curious if we have any hardcore readers in the group?   I thought about this on the bike ride when I mentioned that I liked Steinbeck and Jenn almost bit my head off - apparently "dead white guys' have fallen out of favor (just kidding Jenn).   What kind of books do you like? - fiction or nonfiction?   I like talking about books, but never really figured out how 'book clubs' work.   Book reading is so personal so it must be hard to read them at almost the same time.

Earlier this year, my relationship with book changed a bit when i discovered the eCalibre book reader https://calibre-ebook.com/  - a whole world outside of Amazon.   I became somewhat obsessed with it, and built and ebook library of nearly 1000 books.   As long as you don't ask too many questions as to how i got these books, I will give anyone in this group access to this library if you send me your email address.

So we have done social / party activities in this group, and physical / exercise ones - but what about the nerds out there?   What do "over 40" nerds do for fun?

@Alexis - I haven't read "Red Tent" but I like historical fiction.

How did you do Jennifer?   I finally took a look at your (rather odd) list and hadn't read most.   Here is what I did read:

Adventures of Tom Sawyer,
Call of the Wild,
Catch 22,
Clan of the Cave Bear,
Dune,
Foundation,
A Game of Thrones (about half),
The Godfather (about 5 times),
Great Expectations,
Harry Potter,
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy,
The Hunt for Red October,
The Joy Luck Club,
Jurassic Park,
The Little Prince,
The Lord of the Rings,
The Pillars of the Earth,
Siddhartha,

Other bookworms - extra credit assignment - what books from Jennifer's list have you read?   Which were your favorites?  Which books do you think have been left off?

First priority is to read "Educated" of course - about two weeks left so still time to jump in but this is probably last call.  Contact me if you need the epub file.  I've taken a few days off from reading but will likely read more tonight.

Hi bookworms - how is your reading of "Educated" coming along?  Still more than two weeks so it is not too late to join us - let me know if you need the epub file, as several of you have.   This book picks up steam and gets easier to read the further you get into it .  I'm enjoying it - like any good book it really does let you "live a life that is not your own".

Came to post because I just heard on KPBS that tonight at 8PM they will have a show called, "The Great American Read" - I wasn't paying much attention - sounds like it started from some huge book club on Facebook - looked up the link and found this description but I think I will just tune in on the radio:

Hope everyone's week is off to a good start.

Tennis ?

Zelda

Hi,

Do any tennis players at level 3.5 or above want to try "Padel" tennis at the YMCA in PB?
They have the paddles & balls. It's the same as tennis but you can also hit off the walls. Super fun and cheap!!

They have 2 courts outside.

Cheers,

Welcome Tina - thanks for joining us.  I wonder though if all the women will be packing heat at our parties now :-)

Hi All,

I’m new to the group.   I’m conducting a women’s only firearms safety & shooting clinic this Sunday, Oct. 21 in San Diego.  This is an organized clinic with a full cadre of certified  instructors.

The course is structured for beginners, people who have a firearm in the home but don’t know about it, anyone just wondering what shooting sports are about, self-protection, how to teach children about firearm safety, how to lock and store guns, and more.  It’s $60 and includes firearms, ammo, eye & ear protection.  There will be some classroom time and then range time.   The time on the range is a one-to-one student to instructor ratio so each student has an instructor right at their side.

The emphasis is on safety and how to always be safe around firearms whether or not a person has a firearm or not.   And the day is a ton of fun!

I’ve been a firearms instructor for 6 years and feel especially passionate about women having a comfortable environment to learn about firearms.  Women On Target is a great program and I’m very proud to bring it to the greater San Diego area.

I may be contacted for sign up at 951-970-6432 or email at tdcdesigns@... or tina.clippinger@...    bsafefirearmstraining.com

Direct sign up is at NRAInstructors.org/training      Check the box for Women On Target, then put your zip code, then click search.

Best regards,

Tina Clippinger

Re: Women's Only Firearms Safety Clinic
